Statistical surprises

I’ve been looking over my statistics for the last few weeks and have noticed a couple of issues.

The first is that about 20% of my visitors appear to be some porn site sending a bot to my site (but using about 200 different urls for the referrer!) I noticed this because I like to see where my visitors have come from!

In English – I know if you came from Google etc, because Google’s URL was attached to your visit to the page. I had 200 different URLs that had apparently sent visitors to my site, but they all refered to http://blue.sexer.com/. All URLS that point to that site are now blocked from showing in my statistics (reducing my visitor numbers by about 40%).

Another thing I’ve noticed is that someone out there is visiting my page on a semi-regular basis using Netscape 4. This is an incredibly old browser that is virtually useless IMHO. If you visit my browser comparison page you can find a screenshot of Netscape 4 in action. Prepare to laugh!

Party in the Park

I went to this yesterday with some friends from work and generally had a pretty good time. The only thing really stopping it from being a brilliant day out was getting a major case of sunburn, despite the fact it was cloudy all day… (the sun was out for about 30 minutes – I was there for 7 hours – go figure).

Dummy’s guide to switching from IE to Firefox

Is available here [mozilla.org], for those fed up with Internet Explorer security bugs that take Microsoft 10 months to fix (really!). By contrast when it was pointed out yesterday that a related security hole was also present in Firefox, a new version was released within 24hrs (version 0.9.2 [mozilla.org]) as well as a seperate patch [mozilla.org]. Note that this patch is 1KB in size, which is smaller than 99% of webpages. Microsoft should take note with their multi-megabyte fixes!

UPDATE – this page [sacarny.com] has a timeline for those interested.

Don’t link here?

The goal of any website is generally to get visitors. I want people to visit my site so I don’t seem a loner…, Mozilla want you download a new browser. McDonald’s wants to convince you that they really are a decent company, and not a seller of under-cooked cow unmentionables.

Sellotape [sellotape.com] for some reason unknown to anyone else have this on their site.

Hyperlinking to this site, is not permitted without the express prior permission of Sellotape®…

So sue me.

Shrek 2

Is the funniest film I’ve seen this year – and I know several people who agree with me.

It just about manages to surpass the first movie, which is actually a huge achievement. Shrek 2 manages to mix non-stop hilarity for kids together with humour that only the adults will pick up on ensuring laughs for everyone. The film also takes the p*** out of dozens of well-known places, shops and fairy tales – always with a unique twist. To top it all, Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots is the cutest and funniest cat you will ever see.

One of the summers best films.
