Firefox 1.5 and mozilla.com

So, Firefox 1.5 came out yesterday. I highly recommend it for those not already using it ;-).

I am also very impressed by the new-look mozilla.com . Clean, easy to navigate, and yet incredibly stylish.

Both the web team and the product team should feel very proud their work.

Alias: Season 4

Just finished watching Alias Season 4. Another ‘reboot’, but a show like Alias needs that every now and then. Enjoyable stuff, although the season finale cliffhanger was telegraphed in big letters to me - important information, told by the driver of a moving car, whilst looking at his passenger, not the road…bah

The credits opening credits got changed too. Instead of seeing a small parts of a grainy home video through the lettering, they now feature a rapid intercutting of all of Jennifer Garner’s disguises from Seasons 1-3, together with a soundtrack that goes ‘ooh’ at the appropriate moments. It’s certainly got my vote, but I’m not sure how the rest of the cast feel now that no-one bothers reading their names anymore…

Want inspiration for decorating your house at Xmas?

This is the funniest video I’ve seen for a while - check it out!

Apparently it’s not computer generated - it’s a real house…

Great stuff.

Scrubs

Just finished Scrubs: Season 2. Funny, funny show. Season 2 had the added bonus of a few episodes featuring Heather Locklear, who looks amazing for someone her age (44). Sarah Chalke received a mini-makeover for S2 as well, moving from “dork” to “cute dork”. Both good moves by the producers IMO.

“Those People”

Ever find that there are some people you encounter who just annoy you from the moment you meet them? I’ve got one as my new boss.

Yay me.

EU spending is out of control

For the eleventh year in a row, the European Union’s annual accounts have failed to gain a seal of approval from the EU’s own auditors.

BBC News

Emphasis mine. The story goes on to say that they auditors were only happy with 35% of the spending from the £67 billion budget.

That’s £43.5 billion of money spent unaccountably. It’s incompetence on a huge scale, and it’s about time the UK had nothing to do with it IMO.

iPod Shuffle

Today I acquired a brand new 512Mb ipod shuffle (RRP £69) for the sum of £2. It was the only prize in a raffle held for employees, when a customer didn’t claim their raffle prize.

It’s so small, I fear I’m going to lose it!

Apologies to readers using IE

It seems that the styling I used in a post recently, broke the sidebar. I hadn’t realised this, since I don’t use Internet Explorer except when I have to. It’s now fixed.

Foil Helmets

Among a fringe community of paranoids, aluminum helmets serve as the protective measure of choice against invasive radio signals. We investigate the efficacy of three aluminum helmet designs on a sample group of four individuals. Using a $250,000 network analyser, we find that although on average all helmets attenuate invasive radio frequencies in either directions (either emanating from an outside source, or emanating from the cranium of the subject), certain frequencies are in fact greatly amplified. These amplified frequencies coincide with radio bands reserved for government use according to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). Statistical evidence suggests the use of helmets may in fact enhance the government’s invasive abilities. We theorize that the government may in fact have started the helmet craze for this reason.

Invitation

Yesterday, I got invited to join a select group of dedicated people spread across the world.

Our aim? Help to acheive the world’s largest and most accurate collection of information relating to redacted. We’re a mostly-friendly group, although the occasional spat does break out. Our work doesn’t have a timetable for completion AFAIK, so the world will have to wait for more.

Fireworks

I’m getting a bit pissed off now with the number of bangs, explosions, and noises that could easily be mistaken for machine guns any other day of the year.

From my window, I can see/hear at least 12 different sets of fireworks. It’s getting quite silly actually…

Star Trek: Enterprise

I’ve now watched the complete seasons 1-4, and have the following comments.

I actually preferred the theme before it got jazzed up for season 3.

I like the mirror-universe Ensign Sato. It’s amazing what a small make-up and costume change will do…

The final episode sucked. The penultimate episode on the other hand would have made a perfect series finale - it had a poignant storyline, placed the crew at the centre of a historical event etc.

Lots of storylines were left frustratingly open by various episodes - what happened to the former Vulcan Adminstrator? Did Archer command another ship, or accept promotion? Why were the Xindi never heard from again?

The most frustrating thing though is the price Paramount put on all Star Trek DVDs. RRPs of £85-£90 are just too high. Even though play.com discounts to £55-£60, they are still ridiculously expensive. grr.

Jesus Christ

Having solved all the world’s problems, the EU have turned their attention on the important issue of how to spell the name of Jesus Christ.

It must be getting a little too close for Christmas for the chi-chi crystal palace of the pretentious European Union. Pooh-bahs in Brussels have come up with a new grammar rule for themselves and the Netherlands–making it official that the name “Christ” will soon be written with a lower-case “c”. That was the stipulation in an orthography reform published earlier this month in Brussels.

According to the Kath.net agency, the new spelling legislation will also stipulate that the Dutch word for “jews” (joden) be spelled with a capital “J” when referring to nationality and with a lower-case “j” when referring to the religion. The changes will be mandatory in August of 2006. There is no description of the fines offenders will face if they keep right on spelling “Christ” with a capital “C”.

<sarcasm>Keep up the good work!</sarcasm>

Christmas Cards

Since early-October, we’ve been selling charity Xmas cards at work. Now angry emails are emanating from ‘the hierarchy’, because we aren’t selling enough.

I really don’t understand - (a) the company isn’t making any profit on them, and (b) it seems fairly obvious to me that many won’t be sold until December.

What is there to get stressed about?
